First round exits are nothing new with this Toronto Maple Leafs team; we haven’t made it past the first round in 17 years!
I shudder to even think about that number.
But as most teams exit the first round (crashing and burning), and enter the off-season searching for help to upgrade themselves, NHL general managers look forward to building their farm system depth on draft day and retooling at free agency. Unfortunately, Kyle Dubas has left the cupboards completely bare and can’t do either in the offseason. Essentially, he’ll be a spectator for the rest of the playoffs, and has turned himself into a stoic observer at the draft table and during the entire free agency period.
That’s why I call to Fire Kyle Dubas before he does any more damage.
On draft day 2021, Kyle Dubas traded away their 1st, 3rd, 4th, conditional 6th and 7th round draft picks and worse is following that up with trading on draft day 2022 their 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th round draft picks. This how you make a team and farm system bad really, really quickly.
Dubas is trading draft collateral and depth in hopes to win, but can’t find a way to get out of the first round. Jim Rutherford while GM for the Pittsburgh Penguins traded away boatloads of draft picks away and the current team is suffering depth issues now – but guess what: he has TWO Stanley Cup wins during the time he went all-in. Dubas meanwhile took the risks, traded draft picks and failed. This is the main reason why he should be fired; he’s mortgaging the future while producing ZERO results.
To put it mildly, the Leafs have ZERO cap flexibility for next season.
They will be hard pressed to re-sign Zach Hyman, Travis Dermott and all of the other veteran free agents. The Maple Leafs yet again will be plucking from the veteran-reclamation-project bargain bin…and why is that? Because Kyle Dubas has issued massive contracts to players that haven’t proven themselves.
Yes, Austin Matthews is going to win the Rocket Richard Trophy, but he’s never advanced past the first round. Mitch Marner is a regular season marvel, but disappeared altogether when it mattered most and hasn’t scored in 18 consecutive playoff games (!). Dubas was pressured into signing Matthews and Marner to larger contracts than comparable players; Mikko Rantanen, Sebastian Aho and Brayden Point all signed for significantly less and are playing in the second round of the playoffs. Nathan MacKinnon is making $6.1 million dollars and is twice the player Marner has become.
The Chicago Blackhawks have been pinned against the cap for what seems like a decade with the massive Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane contracts; but guess what, they have THREE Stanley Cups to show for it. Every off-season the Blackhawks have had to revamp their entire team and so will the Leafs due to Dubas’s massive salary cap gaffes.
This is the other main reason he should be fired.
Toronto ownership, please #FireDubas. He’s done enough damage already.
