A private conversation between 7 Sens players was posted for the world to see. An Uber driver proved to all of us, that privacy is dead and big brother is always watching. While in Pheonix on a recent road trip, Chris Wideman, Thomas Chabot, Matt Duchene, Dylan Demelo, Chris Tierney, Colin White, and Alex Formenton vented about some of their struggles. It was posted for the whole world to see and has once again painted the Ottawa Senators as an organization spinning its tires.
We’ve all been there. When going out with coworkers, airing grievances about your boss and management is quite common–we’ve all done it. No workplace is immune to these kind of conversations, pro sports teams included.
Many current and former players have come to the defense of the 7 Ottawa players in the video, but many quotes from that Uber ride won’t wash away anytime soon. Most notably, Matt Duchene’s comments will get the lions share of the criticism. Duchene of course had a very public divorce with Colorado before being traded to Ottawa last November. Defenceman Chris Wideman seated in the front of the Uber, first chimed in saying “Do you notice when Martin Raymond runs the video, if you actually do pay attention, he doesn’t ever teach you anything? He just commentates what’s happening” Then Duchene seated in the front row behind Wideman can be heard saying ” Here’s the other thing, we don’t change anything ever,so why do we even have a meeting? I haven’t paid attention in three weeks” Matt Duchene is a veteran on a young team, his voice carries lot’s of weight. If there is one person that needs to address this head on, it’s Duchene. His image is grim given how well his old team is doing and given what Ottawa went through last year. At the very least, a public apology in front of the media before their game with New Jersey tonight will go a long way.
I believe the Sens have every right to take legal action against Uber. This was filmed without the players consent, and you can see once the driver finds out these are pro athletes, his eyes light up. It’s unfortunate this couldn’t be handled behind closed doors. I don’t expect immediate changes, but I do expect there to be moves made. Whether it’s a Matt Duchene or Chris Wideman being moved or a shake up amongst the coaching staff.
In particular it’s Martin Raymond who received the bulk of the criticism. Unfair to him yes, however the players did raise good points in the video. Chris Tierney who was seen and heard in the video looking up stats on his phone pointed to the Sens ranking in the bottom of the league on special teams. That’s the difference between making the playoffs or watching them on TV. The culture was the big issue with this team last year and was supposedly addressed in the off season. However, this video unfair or not has the potential of damaging the culture of the room for a second straight year.
Quick Hits :
Two coaches have been fired in the NHL, John Stevens was the first to go in LA now Joel Quenneville in Chicago. Think about that for a second. Both LA and Chicago were the modern-day dynasty of the NHL, winning multiple cups and producing some the games best talent. Darryl Sutter was gone long ago in LA, but now Stevens is gone, which begs the question are the Kings players now past their prime? My gut tells me yes. Chicago is in cap hell, we knew this when they locked up all their star players from their previous cup run. With Quenneville gone, that signals a rebuild could be coming.
Is Pittsburgh next? It’s early and I believe they have the talent to figure this out, but their last two losses have been eye opening. A 5-0 home loss on national television against a Maple Leaf’s team with no Auston Mathews or William Nylander and a 5-1 loss to a struggling New Jersey team.
If you read this blog or listen to my podcast you would have known to not overlook the Titans on Monday Night Football. The sexy pick was Dallas at home. The Cowboys were coming off a bye and just made a splash acquiring Amari Cooper. Great. Cooper has largely been a bust as a former 4th overall pick, and Dak Prescott and Jason Garett both don’t look to be on the same page. That relationship seems to be on it’s last legs. Someone is getting fired in big D. Don’t overlook the Titans, their run defense is off the charts. They allowed just 72 yards on the ground last night and are back to .500.
